Your privacy matters deeply to us. This policy explains what personal information Datea collects, why we collect it, and how we protect it. By using Datea, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Who We Are
Datea ("we," "our," or "us") is a dating application that helps adults find meaningful 1-on-1 connections. We are registered as the developer of the Datea app on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. For privacy inquiries, contact us at privacy@getdatea.app.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide Directly
- Account information: Your phone number, used solely for OTP-based authentication via Firebase Auth. Datea uses phone number verification only — we do not collect passwords or support email/Google/Apple sign-in.
- Profile information: Name (or display name), date of birth, gender identity (Man, Woman, Transman, Transwoman, Non-binary, or Other), bio, interests, photos, and your discovery preferences (age range, preferred distance, genders you're interested in meeting).
- Posts and pitches: Content you write and share on the platform, including date ideas, voice pitches, and messages.
- Stories: Photos and captions you share as your story (automatically deleted after 24 hours).
- Communications: Messages you exchange with connections through the in-app chat.
- Reports and feedback: Content you submit when reporting another user or contacting support.
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Location data: GPS coordinates when you grant location permission, used to calculate distance to nearby posts and to attach your location to your profile and posts. You may also set your location manually by city name if you prefer not to grant GPS access.
- Device information: Device type, operating system version, and app version for troubleshooting and compatibility.
- Usage data: Features you use, screens you visit, and interactions within the app (aggregated and anonymized for analytics).
- Push notification tokens: Your OneSignal device identifier, used to deliver push notifications about pitches, connections, messages, and hearts.
2.3 Biometric Data
Datea offers an optional biometric unlock feature (Face ID or fingerprint) accessible from Settings. If you enable this feature, all biometric matching is performed entirely on-device by your operating system (iOS Face ID / Touch ID or Android BiometricPrompt). Datea never receives, transmits, or stores any biometric data. The biometric feature is only used to gate access to the app on re-launch; it does not affect any other Datea functionality.
2.4 Information From Third Parties
- Firebase (Google): We use Firebase Authentication (for phone OTP sign-in), Firestore (database), and Firebase Storage (photos, voice pitches). Firebase may collect usage diagnostics under Google's privacy policy.
- OneSignal: We use OneSignal to deliver push notifications and transactional emails (e.g., new pitch alerts). OneSignal processes your device identifier and, if provided, your email address for this purpose.
- Apple / Google: If you purchase a Datea Brew or Datea Reserve subscription, payment is processed entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Store). We receive only a confirmation of the purchase and the product ID — never your payment card details.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To create and manage your account and verify your identity via phone OTP.
- To match you with nearby users based on your posts, location, and discovery preferences (including age range, distance, and interested-in genders).
- To display short-code tags on your posts (e.g.,
25F4A) derived from your age, gender, and interested-in preferences, so other users can understand who you are looking to connect with. - To facilitate messaging and connections between users.
- To display your profile, posts, and stories to other users in accordance with your settings.
- To send you push notifications and emails about activity relevant to your account (pitches, hearts, connections, messages).
- To enforce our Terms of Service and keep the platform safe.
- To investigate reports of misconduct and take appropriate action.
- To process and validate your Datea Brew or Datea Reserve subscription status.
- To improve the app through aggregated, anonymized analytics.
- To comply with applicable laws and legal obligations.
4. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal data. We share information only in these circumstances:
- With other users: Profile information, posts, and stories you create are visible to other Datea users as intended by the app's social features.
- With service providers: Firebase (Google) and OneSignal process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements.
- For legal compliance: We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the safety of users or the public.
- In a business transfer: If Datea is acquired or merges with another company, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
5. Data Retention
- Stories are automatically deleted after 24 hours via Firestore TTL rules.
- Account data is retained while your account is active. You may delete your account at any time, which removes your profile, posts, and messages from our active systems within 30 days.
- Backup copies may persist for up to 90 days following deletion for disaster recovery purposes.
6. Your Rights and Choices
- Access and correction: You may view and update your profile information at any time within the app.
- Deletion: You may delete your account through the app settings or by contacting privacy@getdatea.app.
- Location permissions: You may revoke location access at any time through your device settings. Note that doing so limits discovery features.
- Notifications: You may opt out of push notifications and emails through the Notifications toggle in Datea's Settings screen, or through your device settings.
- Data portability: You may request a copy of your personal data by contacting us at privacy@getdatea.app.
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA) or California, you may have additional rights under GDPR or CCPA respectively. Contact us to exercise these rights.
7. Sensitive Personal Data
Gender identity (including Transman, Transwoman, and Non-binary options) is considered sensitive personal data under certain privacy laws. We collect this information solely to operate core app features (displaying your profile and post tags). We do not share your specific gender identity with advertisers or unaffiliated third parties. You may update or remove this information at any time in Profile Settings.
8. Data Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect your information, including:
- All data in transit is encrypted using TLS/SSL.
- Firestore security rules restrict access so users can only read and write data they are authorized to access.
- Firebase Storage rules limit media access to authenticated users.
- Profile photos use blur-by-default until a connection is established or a Brew+ photo reveal is used.
- Biometric data (if you enable biometric unlock) is processed entirely on-device and never transmitted to Datea servers.
No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Children's Privacy
Datea is intended exclusively for users who are 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we become aware that a minor has created an account, we will immediately terminate it and delete their data. If you believe a minor is using Datea, please contact us at privacy@getdatea.app.
10. International Users & Data Transfers
Datea is operated from the Philippines and is available worldwide. Our service providers (Google Firebase, OneSignal) may process data in the United States and other countries. By using Datea, you consent to the transfer of your information to these locations, which may have different data protection laws than your country of residence.
European Economic Area (EEA) and United Kingdom Users — GDPR
If you are located in the EEA or UK, we process your personal data under the following legal bases:
- Contract performance: Processing necessary to provide the Datea service you signed up for (account creation, matching, messaging).
- Legitimate interests: Safety, fraud prevention, and improving the Platform, where these interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Consent: Location access and marketing communications, which you may withdraw at any time.
Under GDPR, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or port your personal data, and the right to object to processing. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. To exercise these rights, contact privacy@getdatea.app.
California Users — CCPA
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how it is used, the right to delete your personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. Philippines Users — Data Privacy Act of 2012
Datea complies with the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10173) and the regulations of the National Privacy Commission (NPC). Philippine users have the right to be informed, to access, to object, to erasure and blocking, to damages, and to data portability regarding their personal data.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you via in-app notification or email at least 14 days before the changes take effect. Continued use of Datea after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
